Abstract
AbstractThis study dealt with the linguistic taboos in the Jordanian society as apractical study. The study collected the words refrained to be spoken by thespeaker in his/ her conversation in front of others, taking into consideration thecontext and prestige and degree of its acceptance in the society. It found thatthis acceptance of individual words varies from one environment to another andit also depends on the nature of the recipient in terms of his/ her sex, age andnumber of recipients.The study discussed the motives of taboos in speaking such as the religiousmotive which is the most powerful for the speaker as well as the social motivewhich is the governor of the individual’s sayings in the community where she/he lives. The study also discussed the cultural motive bearing the culturalheritage of the speaker which is the component of his/ her personality and,finally, the psychological motivate, which is represented in a number of aspectssuch as fear and disgust and pessimismThe study referred to the linguistic taboos through a fundamental view of theArab scholars. The study pointed out that the early Arabs reject the obscenewords in many ways: metaphor, gentleness of sayings and other things provingthem with samples of linguistic taboos in the ancient Arabic heritage.The study also examined the prohibited words in the Jordanian society byconsidering a number of subjects such as words related to diseases, women andtheir needs, terms related to sexual organs and their needs as well as terms thatexpress some behaviors.
