Abstract
The aim of this paper is to examine the phenomenon of material gain from poetry in the Abbasid period. Although the material motive behind literary creativity is very strong and essential, material gain was not an aim in early Arabic poetry. It is a new motive to the Arabic poets and it came to existence only lately under the pressure of poverty and their desire for leisure and the dwindling of tribal fanaticism.
